and the wider community.

Forest-T.R.E.E.-Centre
Working with industry, academic and Government organisations,
such as Qld DPI Forestry, Jigsaw Personnel and AustralianTimber.com have created the Forest-T.R.E.E.-Centre (Forest
Timber Resource and Environmental Education Centre). An innovative
learning and support environment, promoting the sustainability
of Australian Forestry and Timber
industries. Educational
programs are designed to cover the full supply chain
from seed collection through to the diverse range of
products and applications including recycling, waste
utilisation and reduction. These programs are set within
the rapidly evolving social, environmental and economic
context and reflect the historical significance of the
forest industries to the development of the Sunshine
Coast, Queensland and Australia whilst focusing on sustainable
futures.
The centre will become an unparalleled education and information
facility incorporating an interpretative forest walk, demonstrations
of ecologically sustainable forestry and building practices
plus static displays. We are producing a range of programs,
aligned with the Queensland and National
Schools Curricula and operating in conjunction with an interactive web site,
for delivery to student groups and the wider community,
targeting an expected 10,000 individuals in the first 12
months.
- To expand the future of Australian forest, timber
and associated industries through stimulating interest
in the research, development and marketing opportunities
for ecologically sustainable Australian native timbers.
- To promote greater appreciation of the economic, social
and environmental benefits provided to all Australians
as a result of sustainable forest management practices.
- To generate knowledge of the scientific concepts,
skills and practical applications utilised in forest
management.
- To promote the many facets of career development within
Australian forests, timber and associated industries.
- To implant within the wider community
a sense of responsibility for all forest environments,
through developing an understanding of the integration
of sustainable forest practices with a balanced ecology.
The Forest-T.R.E.E.-Centre is
achieving great response from schools with on-site and
in-school visits already successfully completed. Adding
to the experience and complementing the National Schools
Curriculum aligned programs, Each child takes home a native
seedling at the conclusion of their visit.
All levels of education will be addressed as the programs
are extended to include tertiary students through a partnership
established with the University of
the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. According to Dr. Helen Wallace, Senior Lecturer
in Agricultural Science, the Forest-T.R.E.E.-Centre will
provide an ideal facility for Undergraduate students taking
part in the range of courses offered within their Sustainable
Production Systems unit.
Through stimulating community interest in the research,
development and marketing opportunities for ecologically
sustainable Australian native timbers and promoting the
economic, social and environmental benefits provided
to all Australians as a result of sustainable forest
management practices, the education programs offered
through
the Forest-T.R.E.E.-Centre will also encourage the many
facets of career development within Australian forests,
timber and associated industries, the benefits of which
will be felt by all sectors today and in the future.
